Zambo eyes fertilizer vs mosquitoes

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The City Council here has sought the assistance of a chemist in Region 9 office of the Department of Science and Technology (DoST 9) to conduct studies on how effective an ”in-organic fertilizer” can allegedly kill mosquito larva.Sonny Rumata, a resident of Barangay Recodo in this city, formally introduced the in-organic fertilizer during the City Council session the other day as one of the solutions to free the city residents from dengue.”Mosquitoes are even prevented from coming back to a breeding site once it will be mixed with the powder-form fertilizer called Eco-Lite,” Rumata claimed.Councilor Lilia Nu?o immediately brought a sample of Eco-Lite fertilizer to the D oST 9 here for them to examine and find out if it contains substances that can harm the environment and human health. But Rumata said he has been using Eco-Lite fertilizer in his farm for the past several years now and has not noticed any negative effect on the environment.Rumata claimed to have seen mosquito larva died when mixed with the fertilizer.”This is not a chemical to kill mosquito larva,” he said.Rumata introduced the in-organic fertilizer after the City Council was discussing possible measures to eradicate dengue-carrying mosquitoes.Nu?o also informed DoST 9 officials here that the council has also adopted a resolution seeking the DoST assistance for the conduct of a separate study on the herbal plant locally called ”tawa-tawa,” which many have been claiming to be very effective in curing dengue disease.City Councilor Eduardo Saavedra, who was a dengue patient, even brought a bottle of water already boiled with tawa-tawa roots during the council’s session.

DA allocates P5 million for Cordillera coffee industry

BAGUIO CITY – Pursuant to the long-standing advocacy of the Regional Development Council (RDC) in the Cordillera, the Cordillera office of the Department of Agriculture (DA) recently earmarked P5 million to strengthen the further expansion of the Arabica coffee industry which is considered as the region’s “green gold” that could provide an additional source of livelihood for the people.Based on the projected outcome of the expansion project, the Arabica coffee expansion project will include the establishment of a 60-hectare coffee plantation, conduct of training and training related activities to increase the current production of 300 kilograms of green coffee beans per hectare.Apart from the expansion of the coffee plantation areas in the different parts of the region, the project seeks to generate more employment opportunities and introduce integrated coffee production to actively promote good agricultural practices among coffee growers. The RDC-CAR is currently advocating for massive coffee production in the different parts of the region to serve as a source of livelihood and to help its cause to satisfactorily rehabilitate and properly manage the denuded forests to sustain the region’s title as the watershed cradle of Northern Luzon.DA-CAR officials said the expansion project of the Arabica coffee industry in the region is one of the priority projects of the agriculture department under the high value commercial crop program that is geared towards strengthening the production of high value crops in the countryside.Initially, the dozens of selected coffee growers who have formed associations will undergo trainings and expository tours to enable them to be ideal stakeholders towards positive post-monitoring results.Experts predicted the increased coffee production in the region could help perk up the economy of the Cordillera, particularly in the upliftment of the farmers involved in coffee production.
